Indian Railways to Manufacture 24-Coach Vande Bharat Sleeper with Enhanced Capacity
The Indian Railways is embarking on an ambitious project to manufacture a 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train, designed to accommodate significantly more passengers while offering superior onboard facilities. This initiative follows the successful launch of the 16-coach Vande Bharat sleeper variant, marking a new chapter in India's rail infrastructure development.
Design and Manufacturing Under Make in India
The new train will be built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, aligning with the Make in India initiative. Currently in the design stage, the prototype is targeted to be rolled out by the end of 2026. According to senior railway officials, this train will feature enhanced passenger carrying capacity and improved onboard service capabilities, setting a new benchmark for sleeper travel in the country.
Historical Context and Recent Launches
On January 17, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train from Howrah to Guwahati in West Bengal's Malda. He also virtually inaugurated a second service running from Guwahati's Kamakhya Junction to Howrah. These launches signify a transformative era for Indian Railways, introducing luxurious, comfortable, and safe travel options that rival the long-standing reputation of Rajdhani Express trains, which have been operational since 1969.
Coach Configuration and Increased Capacity
The 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper will comprise:
- 17 Third AC coaches
- 5 Second AC coaches
- 1 First AC coach
- 1 AC Pantry car
This configuration will provide a total capacity of 1,224 passengers, representing a 49% increase compared to the existing 16-coach train, which has 823 berths. The additional 401 berths aim to meet growing passenger demand and enhance travel convenience.
Advanced Amenities and Passenger Comfort
To ensure efficient onboard service management, the train will feature mini-pantry spaces and linen storage areas across coaches. Passenger amenities include:
- Ergonomically designed berths
- Integrated reading lights
- Mobile and laptop charging points
- WiFi-enabled passenger information and infotainment systems
- Vacuum-assisted toilets
- Improved luggage spaces
- Modern interior fittings
Special provisions for Divyangjan passengers, such as accessible toilets and ramps, are also integrated into the design planning.
Safety and Technological Features
The new Vande Bharat sleeper will incorporate state-of-the-art safety and technological advancements:
- Advanced propulsion and control systems
- Regenerative braking for energy efficiency
- Crashworthy stainless-steel car body meeting contemporary safety standards
- Fire safety measures aligned with international norms
- CCTV surveillance and intelligent diagnostics
- Integration of Kavach, the train collision avoidance system
The train is designed to achieve a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, ensuring faster and safer journeys.
Fare Structure and Pricing
Passengers on board the Vande Bharat sleeper will be charged based on distance, with rates set at:
- Rs 2.4 per km for Third AC
- Rs 3.1 per km for Second AC
- Rs 3.8 per km for First AC
For distances up to 400 km, the minimum fares are:
- Rs 960 for Third AC
- Rs 1,240 for Second AC
- Rs 1,520 for First AC
Goods and Services Tax will be levied separately on these fares.
This development underscores Indian Railways' commitment to modernizing India's rail network, offering passengers a blend of comfort, safety, and efficiency in long-distance travel.
