Kanpur Records Season's Highest Temperature of 43.2°C, Heat Index to Cross 50°C
Kanpur Hits 43.2°C, Heat Index May Exceed 50°C

The maximum temperature in Kanpur touched 43.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, marking the highest recorded this season. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the heat index is expected to cross a dangerous 50 degrees Celsius, posing serious health risks to residents.

Temperature Readings from Multiple Observatories

Data from the Air Force weather observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius, while the CSA weather department noted 41 degrees Celsius. Weather expert Dr S Sunil Pandey stated that several other observatories across the city have reported temperatures exceeding 42 degrees Celsius, confirming the severity of the ongoing heatwave.

IMD Warning and Expected Conditions

The IMD has warned that residents of the Kanpur division are unlikely to get any immediate relief from the prevailing extreme weather conditions. With intense solar radiation, both the temperature and heat index are expected to rise further in the coming days. Daytime conditions are likely to worsen with the possibility of strong, scorching winds resembling heatwave conditions, which could exacerbate health issues for those exposed to the outdoors.

Adding to the discomfort, relative humidity has been recorded at 54%. Dr Pandey explained that high humidity levels are preventing sweat from evaporating efficiently, thereby increasing the ‘real feel’ temperature and causing severe unease among residents. He attributed the extreme heat in Kanpur and the Bundelkhand region to geographical and climatic factors.

Geographical Factors Behind the Heat

“Kanpur is located far from the sea, resulting in a continental climate. Due to the lack of maritime influence, summers are extremely hot while winters turn very cold,” Dr Pandey said. This inland location, combined with clear skies and high solar radiation, contributes to the intense heat experienced during summer months.

Dr Pandey also noted that Kanpur currently ranks as the fifth hottest city in the state, with Prayagraj topping the list at 44.4 degrees Celsius. Other cities in the region are also experiencing similar or worse conditions, highlighting the widespread nature of the heatwave across Uttar Pradesh.

Precautions and Recommendations

Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak heat hours, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM. It is recommended to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activities, and wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. The IMD has urged people to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration.

With no immediate relief expected, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The coming days are likely to see temperatures remaining above 40 degrees Celsius, with the heat index making conditions feel even hotter.
