The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heat and humidity across coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The alert comes as temperatures are expected to rise significantly, with humidity levels making conditions feel even hotter.
Warning Details
The IMD predicts that maximum temperatures in these regions will be above normal, leading to discomfort. The combination of heat and high humidity could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Affected Areas
The warning covers the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Thanjavur, as well as the union territory of Puducherry.
Precautionary Measures
The IMD advises residents to take necessary precautions:
- Avoid going out during peak heat hours, typically between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not thirsty.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
- Use umbrellas, hats, or caps when outdoors.
- Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.
Special care should be taken for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Weather Outlook
The IMD expects the heat and humidity to persist for the next few days. Residents are urged to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts due to potential squally weather.
The authorities are on alert and have set up heat action plans in several districts to mitigate the impact.
