Goa Government Approves New State-of-the-Art Archives Building
Goa Approves New Archives Building with ISO Standards

The Goa government has granted in-principle approval for the construction of a new building dedicated to the directorate of archives, to be located at the site of the former IPHB building at Altinho, Panaji. This initiative aims to significantly strengthen the preservation of the state’s rich documentary heritage.

Modern Archival Facility with International Standards

Additional director of archives Balaji Shenoy confirmed that the facility will be developed in accordance with internationally recognised ISO standards for archival repositories. These standards include temperature-controlled storage systems and other essential conditions designed to protect fragile records from deterioration over time.

Key Features of the Proposed Building

The new archives building will house dedicated repositories for various types of records. In addition, it will include conservation and restoration laboratories equipped with advanced tools and techniques. Specialised preservation units will be set aside for rare manuscripts, government records, and historical collections that require careful handling.

“The facility will incorporate the latest archival preservation technologies adopted by leading institutions worldwide,” Shenoy said. This ensures that Goa’s archival practices remain at the forefront of global standards.

Enhanced Access for Researchers and the Public

The project also includes dedicated spaces for researchers and scholars, alongside public consultation areas. These additions are intended to facilitate easier access to archival materials for academic and public use.

To improve accessibility further, the department plans to introduce a QR code-based digital retrieval system. This system will enable users to access information on archival holdings and obtain documentation through simplified processes, reducing the time and effort required to locate specific records.

Preserving a Unique Historical Legacy

The directorate of archives houses one of Asia’s oldest repositories of records, documenting the history of Portuguese rule in India and its political, cultural, economic, and diplomatic relations across the region. Its collections include nearly 12,000 Portuguese-language manuscripts covering a wide range of subjects, from administrative documents to literary works.

Shenoy emphasised that the new facility will help ensure the long-term preservation of Goa’s unique archival heritage. This heritage reflects a blend of indigenous manuscript traditions and centuries of Portuguese documentation practices, making it an invaluable resource for historians and researchers worldwide.

The approval marks a significant step forward in safeguarding Goa’s historical records for future generations, combining modern technology with traditional preservation methods.
