Female Kangaroo Dies at Kanpur Zoo After Two-Month Illness

A female kangaroo died at the Kanpur Zoo on Wednesday morning after undergoing treatment for two months for a severe infection in her teeth and gums. According to zoo director Kanhaiya Patel, the infection had spread to the gums and jaw, leaving her unable to eat properly.

Treatment and Postmortem

The zoo’s wildlife veterinarians continuously treated her, but the medicines failed to stop the infection, which eventually reached the brain. A postmortem conducted on Wednesday confirmed a severe infection. Samples from the body are being sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly for further examination.

Background of the Kangaroos

Zoo ranger Naved Ikram and his team brought two pairs of kangaroos from Gujarat in January 2025. One pair was white and the other was brown. Last year, the brown kangaroo pair gave birth to an offspring, increasing their number to three.
