In a significant push for eco-tourism and recreational facilities, the Dumka forest division opened the Chutonath Biodiversity Park near the foothills of Chutonath Temple on Thursday. Jama MLA Lois Marandi and local forest officials inaugurated the 3.5-hectare park, which was developed at a cost of Rs 10 crore over two years.
The new park, located 10 km outside the city under Jama block, is set to emerge as a major attraction in the district, drawing devotees, families, children, youth, and tourists eager to experience the region's natural beauty. Spread across a lush landscape, the park pays homage to Santhal Hul heroes with statues of Sido-Kanho, Chand-Bhairav, and Phulo-Jhano. It also features a children's play area, a scenic pond, gazebos, landscaped gardens, a life-size elephant statue, and an open auditorium designed for cultural events and community gatherings.
Environmental Learning and Amenities
Officials said the biodiversity park has been planned not only as a leisure destination but also as a centre for environmental learning. Diverse plant species have been introduced to strengthen greenery and biodiversity, while educational models have been installed to promote environmental awareness among visitors, particularly children and youth. Basic amenities including drinking water, toilets, and accessible facilities for differently-abled visitors have been provided to ensure inclusivity and convenience.
"After initiatives like Dumka Park and eco-cottages at Masanjore, Chutonath Park is another vital step in promoting tourism and environmental consciousness in Dumka and Jharkhand," said Satvik, Dumka divisional forest officer. The park is poised to serve as a prime spot for nature enthusiasts, tourists, and locals seeking respite in a lush, natural setting.
