Forest officials in Odisha's Ganjam district made a grim discovery on Wednesday when they recovered the carcass of a blackbuck, an endangered species, near Bhetanai under the Aska forest range. The incident has raised concerns about the growing threats to wildlife from increasing vehicular traffic in the region.
Details of the Tragic Incident
According to forest authorities, the blackbuck was a five-year-old male that died due to a road accident. Preliminary investigations suggest that a car ran over the animal, leading to its immediate death. After the discovery, the carcass was taken for a postmortem examination conducted by a local veterinary doctor.
Following the postmortem, the remains were buried as per standard wildlife protocol, confirmed Pramod Kumar Panda, the range officer of Aska. This procedure is mandated to prevent any potential spread of disease and to respect conservation guidelines.

The blackbuck holds significant conservation importance in India. It is included in Schedule-1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act-1972, which provides it with the highest level of legal protection. Amulya Upadhyaya, president of the blackbuck protection committee, highlighted that road accidents have emerged as a major threat to these animals, especially due to a recent surge in their local population.

In response to such incidents, forest officials have implemented several safety measures. Range officer Pramod Kumar Panda stated that speed breakers and road humps have been installed in vulnerable areas to slow down vehicular traffic. Additionally, signage has been placed to alert drivers about the presence of blackbuck habitats.
Authorities have also advised motorists to reduce their speed when passing through these zones to minimize the risk of collisions with wildlife.
