Nagpur: Bharat, the four-year-old Asiatic lion that was relocated from Mumbai to Nagpur's Gorewada Wildlife Rescue Centre last week, is currently suffering from severe health issues, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The animal has developed deep bed sores on both hips, is experiencing partial paralysis, and has tested positive for a trypanosoma infection.
Health Condition of the Lion
Veterinary officers examining the lion discovered pus oozing from the wounds on both hips. Additionally, the lion has suffered hair loss in the abdominal region and has been continuously lying on one side. Officials described the animal as weak and under significant stress. Treatment and continuous monitoring by veterinary officers are underway.
Test Results and Ongoing Investigations
Tests conducted for haemoprotozoan infection returned a positive result for trypanosoma. Furthermore, molecular investigations for viral diseases are also in progress, officials stated.
Background of the Transfer
Bharat was shifted from Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali to the Gorewada rescue centre on May 23. This move followed recommendations from the veterinary committee at the national park and orders issued by the chief wildlife warden and principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife), Maharashtra.
Previous Medical History
The lion had been brought to Mumbai from Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden in January 2025 under an approved animal exchange programme. Despite prolonged treatment, he failed to show clinical improvement, which prompted the decision to transfer him to Gorewada for specialized care.
Officials remain hopeful that the new environment and dedicated veterinary attention will aid in Bharat's recovery.
