Musk's Direct Challenge to YouTube's Model
The plan was set in motion on Wednesday, December 31, when Musk responded to a public suggestion on the platform. A user proposed that X should offer superior financial incentives to pull creators away from traditional platforms like YouTube. Elon Musk's simple reply was, "Ok, let's do it." The user's argument centred on the idea that platforms willing to pay creators fairly will be the primary sources of authoritative content in the age of Large Language Models (LLMs) scraping the internet.
Musk then tagged X's head of product, Nikita Bier, introducing a crucial condition for the increased payouts. He insisted on "rigorously enforcing no gaming of the system" to prevent fraud and ensure the integrity of the reward structure. Bier promptly confirmed that his team is already addressing this concern.
A New System to Combat Fraud and Ensure Fairness
In his reply to Musk, Nikita Bier stated, "On it," revealing that X's team has developed a new method designed to eliminate approximately 99% of fraudulent activity. This system is expected to ensure that only authentic, high-quality engagement and content are financially rewarded, directly addressing Musk's stipulation.
This initiative follows Musk's own admission that X has been underpaying its creators. Earlier in October, commenting on a post by Bier, Musk pointed out, "No, the issue is that we are underpaying and not allocating payment accurately enough." He didn't shy away from comparing X's performance unfavourably to YouTube, flatly stating, "YouTube does a much better job." This new plan appears to be a direct effort to close that gap and redefine the competitive landscape.
