Major X Outage Disrupts Users Worldwide on Friday
X, the platform formerly called Twitter, suffered a significant global outage on Friday, January 16. Thousands of users across major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata experienced disruptions. People in the United States and the United Kingdom also reported widespread problems.
Platform Fails to Load for Many
Users encountered blank screens and loading failures on both the web platform and the mobile app. Many could not access the service for a considerable period. While the social media platform has restored functionality for numerous users globally, some continue to report ongoing issues.
Social Media Reactions Pour In
Social media users shared their experiences during the outage. One person wrote, "X is down worldwide. Now I see how addicted I am to this platform." Another user questioned, "X seems down… or is it just my connection?"
A different individual stated, "X is down. I first thought Elon suspended my account." Someone else expressed frustration, saying, "Twitter went down for like an hour and it was literal hell I can't stand my own thoughts!"
Outage Statistics Reveal Scale
By 10:22 am Eastern Time, Downdetector recorded over 62,000 problem reports from users in the United States. The platform collects outage reports from various sources to track service disruptions.
In the United Kingdom, approximately 11,000 incidents were logged. Downdetector observed a sharp spike in problem reports for X around 3 pm local time, which corresponds to 9 pm Indian Standard Time.
Indian users reported more than 3,000 issues. However, the tracking website cautioned that actual affected user numbers might differ from reported figures since these submissions come directly from users themselves.
Second Disruption This Week
Friday's operational disruption marks the second outage for X this week. The social media platform reportedly experienced another widespread failure just three days earlier on January 13.
X suffered a significant outage on Tuesday evening, January 13. Users in India and the United States reported difficulties accessing both the app and website. Downdetector received thousands of complaints during that incident, with major cities in both countries among the most impacted areas.
