In a significant development for India's railway infrastructure, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a detailed inspection of the country's inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper Train at the New Delhi Railway Station. This move marks a pivotal advancement in modernizing long-distance overnight rail travel in India.
A Close Look at the Sleeper Train's Modern Amenities
During his visit, Minister Vaishnaw, who oversees Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, meticulously examined the new sleeper coaches. His assessment covered the seating and berthing arrangements, contemporary interior design, advanced lighting, and the comprehensive suite of passenger amenities. Railway authorities emphasized that passenger safety and onboard facilities have been given paramount importance in this new train model.
A standout feature is the integrated safety system. The train is equipped with the indigenous KAVACH anti-collision technology, alongside automatic doors and upgraded fire safety measures. To ensure hygiene, coaches will have disinfectant sprayers for regular sanitization. Furthermore, every coach is fitted with CCTV surveillance, significantly boosting security for passengers on overnight journeys.
Design Innovations and Regional Flavors on Board
The train introduces several innovative design changes aimed at improving passenger comfort. Special attention has been paid to toilet design, with new layouts engineered to maintain better cleanliness and minimize water splashing—a common grievance on long-distance trains. These upgrades are part of Indian Railways' broader mission to enhance hygiene and provide a more refined travel experience.
The train is set to operate on the route connecting Guwahati in Assam to Howrah in West Bengal, effectively linking the Northeast with eastern India. Adding a unique cultural touch, the onboard catering will feature region-specific meals. Passengers boarding from Guwahati will be served authentic Assamese cuisine, while those embarking from Kolkata will enjoy traditional Bengali dishes.
Technical Prowess and Imminent Launch
Technically, the sleeper version boasts a 16-coach configuration designed for optimal capacity and comfort. The formation includes 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches, and one AC first-class coach, with a total passenger capacity of approximately 823. It incorporates state-of-the-art suspension for a smoother ride and ergonomic interiors.
Having successfully completed all necessary trials, testing, and certification phases, the train is now declared ready for commercial operations. The official flag-off is scheduled for January 2024, with Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to inaugurate the service on the Guwahati-Howrah route. As a semi-high-speed train capable of speeds up to 180 kmph, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train represents a fusion of advanced technology, faster transit times, and enhanced comfort, signaling a new era for overnight rail travel in India.
