Planetary Alignment and National Science Day: Goa's Celestial Spectacle
Planetary Alignment Marks National Science Day in Goa

Goa Prepares for a Stellar National Science Day Celebration

Skywatchers across Goa are eagerly anticipating a remarkable celestial event scheduled for February 28, which beautifully coincides with the observance of National Science Day. This astronomical phenomenon promises to offer a visual feast for enthusiasts and the general public alike.

A Dual Celebration: Science and Astronomy

National Science Day is commemorated annually to honor the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect by the esteemed Indian physicist Sir CV Raman in 1928. This year, the day gains an extra layer of significance as it aligns with a rare planetary configuration in the night sky.

The Association of Friends of Astronomy (AFA), Goa, is at the forefront of organizing this celestial viewing. Notably, the association itself marks its 44th anniversary on the same day, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

Details of the Planetary Line-Up

According to AFA, sunset in Goa on February 28 is expected at 6:41 PM. Shortly thereafter, observers will have the opportunity to witness three planets—Mercury, Venus, and Saturn—positioned just above the western horizon, close to the sunset point. Simultaneously, in the eastern sky, Jupiter and a waxing gibbous Moon will be visible, creating a breathtaking celestial panorama.

Further enriching this alignment, Uranus and Neptune will be situated between these two planetary groups. However, viewing these distant giants will require the use of high-powered telescopes, as they are not visible to the naked eye.

Viewing Tips and Challenges

Astronomy enthusiasts are advised to head to coastal areas with clear views of the western horizon to best observe the event. Observing the western cluster of planets may present some challenges, as they will appear in the bright twilight sky, potentially making them harder to distinguish.

For Uranus and Neptune, powerful telescopic assistance is essential, underscoring the importance of organized viewing sessions for a complete experience.

Public Observation Sessions

AFA has scheduled free public observation sessions to facilitate this celestial viewing. On February 28, sessions will be held from 6:45 PM to 8:00 PM at three prominent beaches: Miramar, Bogmalo, and Benaulim. For those unable to attend on the first day, a second session is planned for March 1 at Art Park in Porvorim.

Entry to all sessions is completely free and open to the public, encouraging widespread participation in this educational and awe-inspiring event.
