In a landmark achievement for sustainable industry, scientists at the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) in Kottayam have successfully developed a high-quality, completely eco-friendly paint derived from natural rubber latex. This pioneering formula, a result of nearly a year and a half of dedicated research, is set to challenge conventional emulsion paints in the market with its superior performance and environmental credentials.
The Science Behind the Sustainable Paint
A dedicated team of rubber technology experts, spearheaded by senior scientist Shera Mathew, engineered this novel product at the institute's Rubber Products Incubation Centre (RPIC). The innovation is not just a simple mixture; it is a sophisticated formulation that utilizes natural latex as its principal raw material, combined with seashells, natural clay, and various plant extracts. This unique composition makes the paint water-based, completely free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and eliminates known health hazards associated with traditional paints.
The research and development process spanned approximately 18 months of systematic work and trials. The team's success lies in creating a product that does not rely on synthetic chemicals for coloration. Instead, natural plant extracts can be incorporated to produce a full spectrum of interior shades, making it versatile for home and commercial use.
A Boost for Farmers and a Global Contribution
This breakthrough carries profound significance from both sustainability and economic perspectives. Shera Mathew emphasized that using natural latex as the core ingredient is a farmer-centric development. For rubber growers in Kerala and beyond, this opens a promising new avenue for value addition, potentially leading to enhanced income generation and renewed optimism for the agricultural community.
The product was developed in collaboration with Kerala Paints, a local paint manufacturing brand that approached RRII with the concept of creating an eco-friendly alternative. "We worked on the idea and developed the formula for them," Mathew stated. The institute positions the paint as a world-class, health-first product, expecting it to be a noteworthy contribution from Kerala to the global paint industry.
Official Launch and Future Prospects
The official unveiling and technology transfer ceremony is scheduled for December 23. The event will be inaugurated by V N Vasavan, Minister for Ports, Co-operation and Devaswom, at the Silver Jubilee Hall within the RRII Headquarters in Kottayam. Chandy Oommen, MLA, will preside over the meeting.
This innovation from RRII's technical consultancy division represents a major step forward in green technology.
