India-UK Collaborative R&D Program to Drive Electric Mobility Innovation
A senior government official announced on Monday that the India–UK Collaborative R&D Programme is poised to significantly accelerate the development of cutting-edge, industry-focused technologies for electric mobility. Innovations in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure have been identified as a critical factor in speeding up the adoption of EVs across the country.
Partnership for Next-Generation EV Charging Solutions
Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary at the Technology Development Board, highlighted this initiative as the board formalized an agreement with Scharge Private Limited. The partnership, detailed in an official statement, aims to create a next-generation EV charging solution specifically tailored for commercial fleets and depot operations under the broader programme.
Under this agreement, Scharge will develop an advanced EV charger charge controller that incorporates a patented automated cable management system from Albright Product Design Limited. This system is engineered to boost efficiency, safety, and usability in high-demand charging environments, addressing key challenges in the EV sector.
Key Features and Benefits of the New Technology
The solution includes a motorised overhead cable management setup designed for fleet applications, which offers several advantages:
- Reduced Manual Handling: Minimizes the need for physical intervention during charging processes.
- Limited Cable Wear: Extends the lifespan of charging cables by preventing excessive strain and damage.
- Improved Ease of Use: Enhances user experience through automated operations.
Compatible with existing AC Type-2 chargers, this technology is expected to improve turnaround times while ensuring organized and efficient depot operations. It tackles persistent issues such as cable management, equipment protection, and workflow efficiency, while also mitigating risks associated with cable damage, vandalism, and operational hazards.
Strengthening Domestic Capabilities in EV Charging
Scharge, a company specializing in power electronics and smart charging systems, plans to leverage this project to bolster domestic capabilities in EV charging infrastructure. The initiative supports the development of scalable solutions for the rapidly expanding electric mobility sector, as emphasized in the official statement.
This collaboration underscores a strategic effort to foster technological advancements that can drive sustainable transportation forward, aligning with global trends towards cleaner energy and reduced carbon emissions.
