IIT Madras Announces Road Safety Hackathon 2026 with Artificial Intelligence Focus

The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety, in collaboration with RBG Labs at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), has officially launched the Road Safety Hackathon 2026. This initiative continues to emphasize the theme "AI in Road Safety", building upon previous editions to significantly expand the role of artificial intelligence in tackling India's pressing road safety concerns.

Official Launch and Strategic Importance

The hackathon was formally inaugurated at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, strategically positioning road safety innovation within the nation's broader artificial intelligence transformation agenda. Organizers from IIT Madras have stated that the program specifically aims to foster practical, scalable, and data-driven solutions. The ultimate goal is to develop technologies that can be effectively integrated into existing governance and law enforcement systems to enhance safety outcomes nationwide.

Problem Statements and Solution Tracks

Participants are required to select and develop solutions for one of three distinct problem statements, each targeting a critical area of road safety:

  • DriveLegal: This track focuses on improving legal compliance by providing location-specific information on traffic laws, violations, and fine schedules. It aims to integrate national, state, and local regulations into an accessible system for drivers and authorities.
  • RoadWatch: Designed to empower citizens, this track enables the monitoring of road conditions, tracking of public infrastructure spending, and streamlined reporting of issues to relevant authorities, thereby promoting greater transparency and accountability in road management.
  • RoadSoS: This emergency response track offers location-based access to critical services during accidents. It connects users to the nearest trauma centers, ambulance services, vehicle rescue support, police stations, and emergency contacts, with the primary objective of reducing response times and saving lives.

Eligibility, Participation, and Submission Guidelines

The competition is open to a wide audience, including students, engineers, and technology enthusiasts, with a minimum age requirement of 15 years. No professional qualifications are necessary. Participants may register as individuals or form teams of any size.

Each participant or team is permitted to submit only one entry, which must be registered through the Unstop platform. The submission must correspond to a single chosen problem statement. Required submission materials include:

  1. Functional code in any programming language.
  2. A seven-slide presentation, which must include "Welcome" and "Thank You" slides.
  3. A detailed document outlining all software packages used and key assumptions made during development.

Selection Process, Awards, and Opportunities

Teams shortlisted from the initial submissions will be invited to present their solutions before a live jury at the IIT Madras campus. Schedules for these presentations will be communicated directly to qualifying participants.

The hackathon features attractive cash prizes for the top performers:

  • First Place: Rs 50,000
