Assam's Guwahati Science City 90% Complete, Set to Open Soon
Guwahati Science City Phase 1 Nears Completion

The ambitious Science City project taking shape in Sonapur, near Guwahati, is on the verge of opening its doors to the public. Officials have confirmed that the first phase of this landmark initiative is now 90 per cent complete and is expected to be fully finished in the near future.

What Phase One Will Offer

This initial stage of development focuses on two major structures: the Gate Complex and the Space Odyssey building. According to Jaideep Baruah, Director of the Assam Science & Technology and Environment Council, the Gate Complex is designed to be a hub of digital innovation. It will offer visitors immersive experiences powered by digital applications, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and virtual reality zones.

The adjacent Space Odyssey building will cater to astronomy enthusiasts and the scientifically curious. It is planned to house dedicated astronomy and scientific galleries. "Space Odyssey will have an astronomy gallery, and different thematic presentations of astronomy will be there," Baruah explained to TOI.

A Center for 'Edutainment'

A key highlight of the first phase will be an immersive gallery with a 360-degree projection system. This advanced setup is designed to present various storylines and thematic shows. Baruah described the project's core philosophy, stating that while people will enjoy the visual spectacles, the focus will also be on explaining the science behind the technology used. "That is a matter of education," he said, labeling the Science City as "a centre of edutainment"—a blend of education and entertainment.

In total, six to seven galleries have been planned for this initial phase. Baruah expressed optimism about the overall project timeline, suggesting that the entire Science City could be completed within the next year.

Project Background and Inauguration Plans

The project has received attention at high levels of government. In July last year, Union Cultural Affairs Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat met Assam's Science and Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta in New Delhi to discuss its progress. Following this meeting, officials were instructed to begin preparations for a formal inauguration, signaling that the project is a priority for both state and central authorities.

The development of the Guwahati Science City marks a significant step in enhancing scientific infrastructure and public engagement with science in Northeast India, promising a world-class destination for learning and discovery.
