Gujarat's First Rocket Launch: OmSpace Makes History with Sounding Rocket
In a landmark achievement for India's space sector, OmSpace Rocket and Exploration (OSRE) successfully launched a sounding rocket from Bavaliyari near Dholera in Gujarat on Saturday afternoon. This historic event marks the first rocket flight ever conducted from Gujarat's soil, culminating seven months of dedicated effort by the OSRE team.
Launch Details and Technical Specifications
The 4.2-meter single-stage sub-orbital rocket soared into the sky, achieving its target altitude of 3 kilometers within seconds. It followed a predicted trajectory before making a safe landing approximately 4 kilometers from the launch site, utilizing a dual-parachute recovery system. The launch was witnessed by State Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia and other senior officials, who joined the team in celebration as the rocket ascended.
Indigenous Innovation and Make in India Focus
Ravindra Raj, CEO and founder of OSRE, emphasized that this success is a testament to the Make in India initiative. The rocket incorporated several indigenously developed technologies, including a 3D-printed torch igniter, a sugar-based solid propellant motor, and an airframe and launchpad made from carbon fiber and advanced composites. Raj stated, "The launch successfully validated critical technologies such as propulsion integrity, avionics performance, and autonomous recovery systems. All research, development, and manufacturing were conducted in Ahmedabad." He added that OSRE plans to test another sounding rocket between August and September this year.
Regulatory Approvals and Team Preparation
For the launch, OSRE obtained necessary permissions from multiple authorities, including IN-SPACe, the Indian Coast Guard, Dholera Industrial City Development Ltd, district collector and SP offices, the Airport Authority of India (AAI), and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. A senior OSRE official noted that this collaborative support could pave the way for other startups in the domain. The team spent three days at the site, setting up a makeshift launchpad in an open area near the village, coordinating with government agencies, and conducting final checks on hardware and software.
Historical Context and Industry Impact
Experts highlighted that India's own space journey began with sounding rockets in the early 1960s. These small, cost-effective rockets are crucial for testing technologies for larger projects, providing insights into software, launch, and recovery processes to enable course corrections from the initial phases. The head of an Ahmedabad-based incubation center commented, "With rapid advancements in hardware and software, this is a new era for space startups. Several firms in Ahmedabad and Gujarat have made significant strides in technology development, fundraising, and capabilities." He cited examples like PierSight, which has raised millions and successfully sent payloads to space, with many startups being supported by IN-SPACe in Ahmedabad.
Future Plans and Commercial Aspirations
Looking ahead, Raj revealed that OSRE is developing a larger, orbital-class reusable launch vehicle named Infinity One. The data collected from this recent flight will be integral to scaling up operations and advancing toward commercial missions. This launch not only validates OSRE's technological prowess but also positions it among the handful of Indian startups actively working on launch vehicles, contributing to the growing ecosystem of space innovation in the country.
