Kerala Science Congress 2024 in Kochi: Focus on Ocean Science & Blue Economy
38th Kerala Science Congress from Jan 30 in Kochi

The coastal city of Kochi is set to become the epicenter of scientific discourse in South India as it prepares to host the 38th edition of the Kerala Science Congress. The prestigious event will unfold at St Albert's College from January 30 to February 2, 2024. The inauguration ceremony on January 31 will be graced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

A Deep Dive into Ocean Science and Sustainable Growth

This year's Congress is anchored on the critical theme: 'Ocean Science for Blue Economy and Ecosystem Restoration'. This focus is particularly apt for Kochi, a major hub for marine food processing industries and home to premier marine science institutions like CMFRI, CIFT, Kufos, Cusat, and NIO. The theme is a clarion call for scientists, policymakers, industries, and local communities to collaborate towards restoring ocean health while forging sustainable economic pathways.

Eminent experts will deliver special lectures aligned with this focal theme. Attendees will gain insights from M Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and A Bijukumar, Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos). The Congress aims to demonstrate how Kerala can set a national example for a resilient blue economy by synergizing cutting-edge research, innovative technology, and grassroots participation.

Expo, Awards, and Youth Engagement

Running parallel to the congress, a vibrant science expo will commence on January 30 at St Albert's Higher Secondary School. A hallmark of the event will be the array of pavilions set up by national institutes, R&D centers, and dynamic start-ups, showcasing the latest innovations.

Beyond technical sessions, the Congress has curated special platforms for the next generation of scientists. A dedicated session will allow postgraduate students to interact directly with eminent scientists. Furthermore, the SciSol programme invites young minds aged 15 to 25 to identify pressing local problems in Ernakulam district and propose actionable scientific solutions, with cash awards and prizes for the best entries.

Recognizing Excellence in Science

The inaugural ceremony will also be a occasion to honor scientific excellence. Prestigious awards including the Kerala Science Award, Kerala State Young Scientist Award, Best Scientist Award, and Science Literature Awards will be presented to deserving recipients. The event is expected to draw around 2,000 delegates, including scientists, researchers, educators, students, and industry experts from across the country, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and knowledge.
