Microsoft Confirms Testing of Ad-Supported Xbox Cloud Gaming
Microsoft has finally confirmed it is developing an ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming. This news comes after months of speculation about the tech giant's plans for a free tier of its cloud gaming service.
Gamers Spot Pop-Up Messages Revealing New Tier
Several gamers recently noticed pop-up messages indicating an ad version is in the works. A report from Windows Central states that users have started seeing these messages while launching games.
Last week, multiple users including The Verge's Tom Warren spotted a specific message that read: "1 hour of ad-supported playtime per session." While Microsoft claims this message appeared in error, it essentially confirms the company is testing a session-based model for its cloud gaming service.
How the Ad-Supported Version Will Work
The new tier represents a significant departure from Microsoft's current subscription model. Currently, gamers need either a Game Pass Ultimate or Standard subscription to access cloud features. The ad-supported version will offer different benefits:
- Free access to personal Xbox library via cloud streaming
- A curated selection of legacy titles
- Limited-time access to major game releases
To keep this service free, Microsoft is reportedly implementing specific guardrails. Users may need to watch approximately two minutes of advertisements before beginning each gaming session. Each session will reportedly be capped at one hour of playtime.
Xbox Cloud Gaming in India
Microsoft launched Xbox Cloud Gaming in India late last year, bringing a massive catalog of Xbox games to various devices across the country. This service eliminates the need for a dedicated Xbox console or a powerful gaming PC.
In India, Xbox Cloud Gaming is available through Game Pass subscriptions, similar to other markets. The service comes bundled with Microsoft's updated Game Pass plans introduced in October:
Essential Plan (Rs 499/month)- Access to 50+ curated games for Console and PC
- Unlimited Cloud Gaming including select owned games
- Online console multiplayer access
- In-game benefits for Riot Games and other titles
- Access to 200+ games across Console, PC, and Cloud
- Xbox-published games added within 12 months of launch
- Unlimited Cloud Gaming with priority access and shorter wait times
- Online console multiplayer and in-game benefits
- Access to 400+ games across all screens
- Day one access to new Xbox and third-party games
- Includes EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, and Fortnite Crew
- Highest quality Cloud Gaming up to 1440p with top priority
The introduction of an ad-supported tier could significantly expand access to cloud gaming in India. This move might attract gamers who want to try cloud gaming without committing to a monthly subscription fee.
Microsoft's testing phase suggests the company is serious about making cloud gaming more accessible. The ad-supported model represents an innovative approach to monetization while potentially growing the user base for Xbox Cloud Gaming services.
