Mysuru Experiences Electric 2-Wheeler Surge as Registrations Climb

Mysuru is witnessing a significant rise in electric two-wheeler adoption. Multiple factors are fueling this growth. Rising fuel prices push consumers toward more economical options. Lower running costs make electric vehicles an attractive choice. Improved battery technology also plays a key role.

RTO Data Shows Clear Growth Trend

The Mysuru East Regional Transport Office reports a 16% increase in electric vehicle registrations. This covers the first nine and a half months of the current fiscal year compared to the previous financial year. The data includes cars, two-wheelers, autos, and goods vehicles.

NS Madhura, the Regional Transport Officer for Mysuru East, shared insights with TOI. He stated that more vehicle users now prefer electric vehicles. The primary reason is their lower running costs compared to traditional vehicles. Most of these registered electric vehicles are scooters.

In the 2024-25 financial year, about 1,225 electric vehicles were registered. This financial year, the number has already surpassed that figure within just ten months. As of January 16, 2026, registrations reached 1,424 electric vehicles. This clear upward trend indicates rapid market growth for electric two-wheelers.

Madhura also provided details on electric car registrations. The previous year saw about 12 electric cars registered. This fiscal year, approximately 20 cars have been registered within the same ten-month period.

Showroom Insights Highlight Supporting Factors

A representative from a local two-wheeler showroom explained additional drivers. Government incentives make electric vehicles more affordable. Reduced registration fees lower the upfront cost for buyers. Expanding charging infrastructure across the city reduces range anxiety.

These factors collectively support rising consumer demand. Delivery services and gig-economy fleets are switching to electric vehicles at a faster pace. The shift is logical. Electric vehicles significantly cut operating expenses and require less maintenance.

Technological improvements are also reducing buyer hesitation. Better vehicle range means longer trips between charges. Faster charging technology saves time. Stronger after-sales service networks provide peace of mind to new owners.

Contrasting Trend in Mysuru West RTO

However, the Mysuru West RTO office, designated KA-09, recorded a decline. In the previous calendar year, only 523 electric two-wheelers and 75 electric cars were registered. This contrasts sharply with 2024 figures of 2,778 scooters and 141 cars.

Transport officers attribute this decline to a specific policy change. A new provision now allows vehicle registration anywhere in Karnataka. This means some registrations that might have occurred in Mysuru West are now happening elsewhere.

RTO (West) officer C Vasanth provided historical context. He noted that the Mysuru West office registered the highest number of electric vehicles in the city over the last few years. Since 2024, the office has registered 3,300 electric two-wheelers and 216 electric cars.

Broader Karnataka Vehicle Landscape

Transport authorities offer a statewide perspective. As of March 2025, Karnataka's total vehicle population stands at 3.29 crore. This figure includes 2.96 crore non-transport vehicles and 33 lakh transport vehicles. The growing electric segment is a small but rapidly expanding part of this vast ecosystem.

The story in Mysuru reflects a broader national shift toward electric mobility. Consumer preferences are evolving due to economic and technological factors. The city's transport data provides a clear snapshot of this changing landscape.
