Chennai: The Chennai division of Southern Railway has commissioned 20 new parking facilities during the financial year 2025-26, increasing the total number of authorized parking locations from 106 to 126. This expansion aims to address the growing demand for parking space at railway stations across the division.
Key Highlights of the Expansion
A major highlight of this initiative is the multilevel parking facility at Chengalpet railway station. Built over an area of 820.32 square meters, this facility is designed to manage the heavy passenger footfall at the station. The Chengalpet station, along with Perambur, is also part of development works under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to modernize railway stations across the country.
Stations Benefitting from New Parking Facilities
The new parking facilities have been set up at several stations, including Vandalur, Potheri, Avadi, Tambaram East, Chengalpet, Perambur, Guindy, and St Thomas Mount, among others. These stations were selected based on passenger traffic and demand for parking space.
Features of the New Parking Areas
The newly commissioned parking areas are equipped with modern amenities to enhance safety and convenience for users. Key features include digital ticketing systems, UPI-based payment options, and CCTV surveillance. These measures are expected to streamline the parking process and improve overall security.
This expansion is part of Southern Railway's ongoing efforts to improve passenger amenities and infrastructure. With the addition of these facilities, the Chennai division now offers a total of 126 authorized parking locations, providing more options for passengers who drive to railway stations.
