A power outage struck parts of south Mumbai on Saturday evening, disrupting electricity supply in areas including Babulnath and neighborhoods near Mahalaxmi Race Course. The blackout caused significant inconvenience to residents who were already battling hot and humid weather conditions.
According to sources from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, the outage was triggered around 8 pm after the Malabar Hill transformer's 11kV switchgear tripped. Engineers were immediately dispatched to the site, and power supply was restored at most locations within an hour. However, some areas continued to experience outages due to intermittent tripping, sources said.
This latest disruption has added to growing complaints from residents across the island city over frequent power cuts this summer. Earlier, on April 15, residents in Sion reported outages lasting up to five hours. In Worli, the situation was more severe, with repeated disruptions over three days, culminating in a complete blackout from around 1:20 am to 6:30 am. Parts of Marine Drive and Marine Lines also faced darkness after a power feeder tripped.
BEST supplies electricity to large parts of south and central Mumbai. The utility has been under pressure to address the recurring outages, especially during the peak summer season when demand for electricity surges.
