Nagpur: As Vidarbha continues to suffer from an intense heatwave, Nagpur University (NU) Senate member Manmohan Bajpai has called on the university administration to assign examination centres within a 2-kilometer radius of students' colleges. This measure aims to reduce travel difficulties during the extreme summer conditions.
Letter to Vice-Chancellor
In a letter addressed to the vice-chancellor on Wednesday, Bajpai highlighted the prevailing extreme temperatures and referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for fuel conservation. He requested that students be allotted examination centres either in their own colleges or in nearby institutions. He suggested that centres located beyond a 2-kilometer radius should be avoided whenever possible and sought immediate intervention for students who have been assigned distant centres for exams that have not yet started.
Demand for Basic Amenities
Bajpai also demanded that the university verify essential facilities at examination centres before finalizing allotments. He emphasized that basic amenities such as clean drinking water, functioning fans, hygienic washrooms, adequate lighting, proper desks and benches, and free parking should be ensured for all students. According to him, several students have reportedly been assigned far-off centres despite suitable options being available closer to their colleges. He also referred to complaints regarding inadequate facilities at certain examination venues.
Priority on Student Relief and Fuel Conservation
"Providing relief to students from extreme heat and ensuring fuel conservation should be the university's priority," Bajpai said, urging the administration to issue necessary directions and offer immediate relief to students. The university has yet to respond to the request, but the matter is expected to be taken up in upcoming meetings.
