The Karnataka government has unveiled plans to establish three large-scale sustainable data centre parks with a combined capacity of 1,000 megawatts in Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Mysuru. Energy Minister K.J. George, Industries Minister M.B. Patil, and Information Technology Minister Priyank Kharge held a preliminary meeting with senior officials to discuss the project's roadmap.
Strategic Locations for Green Digital Infrastructure
The proposed parks will be developed in three key cities: Bengaluru, the state's IT hub; Mangaluru, a coastal city with potential for renewable energy; and Mysuru, a growing tech destination. The initiative aims to create a sustainable ecosystem for data storage and processing, leveraging renewable energy sources to minimize environmental impact.
Government's Vision and Next Steps
During the meeting, the ministers emphasized the importance of aligning the project with Karnataka's renewable energy goals. They directed officials to prepare a detailed project report, identifying land parcels, power connectivity, and water availability. The parks are expected to attract major investments from global tech companies, boosting the state's digital economy.
Energy Minister George highlighted that the data centres would be powered primarily by solar and wind energy, ensuring carbon-neutral operations. Industries Minister Patil noted that the parks would create thousands of jobs in construction, operations, and maintenance. IT Minister Kharge stressed the need for robust cybersecurity measures and high-speed internet connectivity.
Timeline and Investment Projections
The government aims to complete feasibility studies within six months, with construction expected to begin in 2027. The total investment is estimated at over ₹30,000 crore, with potential for phased expansion. The parks will offer incentives such as tax breaks and subsidized power tariffs to attract anchor tenants.
Karnataka already hosts the highest number of data centres in India, and this initiative is expected to solidify its leadership in the digital infrastructure space. The sustainable focus aligns with India's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
