The Coimbatore district administration has prepared a comprehensive report for the execution of the green schools programme in three selected schools within the district. These institutions are among the 100 government schools across Tamil Nadu that have been shortlisted for the implementation of this initiative.
Shortlisted Schools
The three schools chosen in Coimbatore are the Anaimalai Government Tribal Residential Middle School, Mettupalayam Government Higher Secondary School, and T A Ramalingam Chettiar Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore city.
Broader Context
A total of 300 schools across the state have been earmarked for transformation under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, which is managed by the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC). The mission aims to develop these schools into self-sufficient models that are climate resilient.
Key Features
The programme includes several sustainable features such as organic gardening, waste and resource management, creating plastic-free zones, implementing rainwater harvesting systems, installing solar panels, and adopting cool roofing technologies. These elements are designed to foster sustainable habits among students.
Additional collector (development) Sanket Balwant Waghe explained the selection criteria: "The schools were shortlisted based on the feasibility of conversion. They must have sufficient space for gardening and solar installation. Students will gain hands-on experience of a sustainable living model. The ultimate goal is to minimize carbon emissions and reduce the temperature on the premises."
