The first indigenous Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft, manufactured under the Make in India initiative, successfully completed its maiden flight from Vadodara, Gujarat, on Wednesday. This marks a significant milestone for India's defense manufacturing capabilities and the government's push for self-reliance in the aerospace sector.
Historic Flight in Vadodara
The aircraft, assembled at the Tata Advanced Systems facility in Vadodara, took off from the city's airport and flew for approximately one hour. The flight was conducted by a team of Indian and Spanish pilots, along with engineers from Airbus and Tata. The C-295 is a twin-turboprop transport aircraft designed for tactical operations, capable of carrying up to 71 troops or 9.5 tonnes of cargo.
Make in India Achievement
The successful first flight underscores the progress of the joint venture between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems. Under the agreement, 56 C-295 aircraft will be manufactured in India, with the first 16 delivered directly from Airbus's facility in Seville, Spain, and the remaining 40 assembled in Vadodara. The indigenous production involves the integration of advanced avionics and systems, with components sourced from Indian suppliers.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the teams involved, stating that this achievement reflects India's growing expertise in aerospace manufacturing. He emphasized that the C-295 will replace the aging Avro fleet of the Indian Air Force, enhancing its operational capabilities.
Key Features of the C-295
- Payload Capacity: 9.5 tonnes or 71 troops.
- Range: Up to 5,000 km with auxiliary fuel tanks.
- Speed: Maximum cruising speed of 480 km/h.
- Versatility: Capable of operating from short and unpaved runways.
Economic and Strategic Impact
The project is expected to generate thousands of jobs and boost the local aerospace ecosystem. It also strengthens India's strategic autonomy by reducing dependence on foreign defense imports. The C-295 program includes a comprehensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in India, ensuring long-term support.
Industry experts view this as a stepping stone for India to become a global hub for aircraft manufacturing. The success of the C-295 could pave the way for future collaborations in the defense sector.
