Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, officially launched India's first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system on Friday. The system was inaugurated at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch stretch of National Highway 48 in Gujarat.
How the Barrier-Less Tolling System Works
The MLFF system allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, utilizing advanced technologies such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag for seamless toll collection. This innovation eliminates the need for physical barriers and manual transactions, enabling a smooth flow of traffic.
Key Benefits of the System
- Reduced Congestion: By eliminating stops, the system minimizes traffic jams at toll plazas, especially during peak hours.
- Time Savings: Commuters save significant travel time as vehicles can maintain speed while passing through.
- Fuel Efficiency: Reduced idling and acceleration improve fuel economy for vehicles.
- Lower Emissions: Decreased fuel consumption leads to lower vehicular emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability.
Government's Vision for Digital Highways
Nitin Gadkari emphasized that the barrier-less system will enhance “Ease of Living” for citizens and boost “Ease of Doing Business” by enabling faster movement of passengers and goods. He credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the initiative reflects the government's commitment to building efficient, transparent, and technology-driven national highways.
The rollout of the MLFF system marks a significant milestone in the digitization of India's highway infrastructure. It aligns with broader government efforts to modernize transportation networks, reduce logistics costs, and improve overall efficiency.
Future Expansion Plans
Officials indicated that the successful implementation at Chorayasi Toll Plaza could serve as a model for other toll plazas across the country. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is evaluating the scalability of the MLFF system to expand its benefits nationwide.
The launch underscores India's progress in adopting cutting-edge technologies for infrastructure development, setting a precedent for future projects in the transportation sector.
