Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday launched Goa's first shackathon, stating that the state aims to attract startups, creators, digital nomads, and innovators from across India by promoting a work-from-beach culture.
CM Sawant Highlights Shift in Work Culture
Sawant remarked that younger generations are increasingly seeking flexibility, creativity, and purpose alongside their work, with many moving beyond traditional jobs to build startups, brands, and careers. He noted that Goa, once perceived solely as a tourist destination, is now creating opportunities for people to stay longer, work remotely, and build ventures while strengthening its startup ecosystem.
"Along with beer and fish, people can also work from the beach," Sawant said, adding that such initiatives could help draw people, particularly from the IT and startup sectors. He emphasized that Gen Z "likes to work from the beach" and described the shackathon as being tailored for them.
IT Minister Rohan Khaunte on Work-from-Goa
IT Minister Rohan Khaunte highlighted that the work-from-home culture could evolve into "work from Goa." He recalled that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people began staying in Goa and working remotely, especially from the creative community. Khaunte said Goa is showcasing a work-from-beach culture where technology and tourism complement each other, allowing startups, innovators, and founders to work while enjoying Goa's beaches, food, and activities.
Khaunte stated that the goal is to create a culture for digital nomads to come to Goa, stay in homestays, support local communities, and work from shacks at their leisure.
Fishermen's Concerns Addressed
During the event, fisherman Pele appealed to Sawant to provide relaxation for fishermen's houses located along the beach under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms. Sawant assured that provisions are available to safeguard them and said, "We will protect all the fishermen's houses. Don't worry."
The shackathon marks a significant step in Goa's efforts to diversify its economy beyond tourism, leveraging its natural beauty to attract a new wave of remote workers and entrepreneurs.
