Delhi Cabinet Approves New Electric Vehicle Policy
The Delhi government has officially cleared a new electric vehicle (EV) policy, offering significant financial incentives to promote cleaner transportation. Under the policy, electric cars priced under Rs 30 lakh will be exempt from road tax and registration fees, making them more affordable for buyers.
Subsidies for Two-Wheelers
For electric two-wheelers, the policy introduces a declining subsidy structure. In the first year, buyers will receive a subsidy of Rs 30,000, followed by Rs 20,000 in the second year and Rs 10,000 in the third year. This step aims to encourage early adoption while gradually reducing dependency on incentives.
Impact on EV Adoption
The policy is expected to accelerate the transition to electric mobility in the national capital. By waiving upfront costs like road tax and registration fees, the government hopes to address one of the key barriers to EV purchase. According to officials, the move aligns with Delhi's broader goal of reducing air pollution and achieving a 25% EV share in new vehicle registrations by 2024.
Industry Reaction
Automakers and environmental groups have welcomed the decision. "This is a progressive step that will make EVs more accessible to the masses," said a spokesperson for the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). However, some experts caution that the declining subsidy for two-wheelers may slow adoption in later years.
Implementation Timeline
The policy will come into effect immediately, with the transport department tasked with issuing guidelines for implementation. The government has also announced plans to set up charging infrastructure across the city to support the growing number of EVs.
