The Chhattisgarh government has taken a significant step toward providing affordable and cleaner piped natural gas to urban households. The state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, approved the Chhattisgarh Urban Gas Distribution Policy 2026 during a meeting at Mahanadi Bhawan in Nava Raipur on April 29. This move is expected to offer consumers a cost-effective alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) while attracting investments in pipeline infrastructure.
Key Objectives of the Policy
Officials stated that the new policy aims to ensure easy availability of clean and affordable natural gas across the state. It focuses on expanding rapid supply through pipelines in urban areas, thereby promoting cleaner energy sources. The government highlighted that this initiative will help diversify fuel usage, reduce reliance on conventional fuels, and create substantial investment and employment opportunities through the development of gas distribution networks.
Financial Assistance Approved
In addition to the gas policy, the cabinet approved financial assistance of approximately Rs 11.98 crore from the Chief Minister's Discretionary Grant Fund. This aid will benefit 6,809 individuals and institutions, providing quick relief to those in urgent circumstances. The assistance aims to support the needy during emergencies and unforeseen situations.
The approval of the urban gas distribution policy marks a pivotal moment for Chhattisgarh's energy landscape. By facilitating the transition to piped natural gas, the state expects to reduce household expenses on cooking fuel and lower environmental pollution. The policy is also anticipated to spur economic growth through infrastructure projects and job creation in the gas distribution sector.
