Bengaluru: Commuters traveling towards northeast Bengaluru via the Lingarajapuram flyover will soon witness a transformed landscape as the long-neglected Kacharakanahalli lake undergoes a major redevelopment under a Rs 14-crore project.
Joint Execution and Funding
The initiative is being jointly executed by the Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) and the minor irrigation department. Of the total project cost, Rs 4 crore is being funded through the corporation’s grant, while the remaining Rs 10 crore is provided by the department.
Scale and Scope of the Project
Spread across an area of 16 acres, the 13-acre lake is currently undergoing desilting and deepening works, expected to be completed by the end of May. Officials state that these efforts will significantly enhance the lake’s water-holding capacity.
The lake, located in the Sarvagnanagar assembly constituency, has a catchment area of 3.9 square kilometers. According to a BNCC engineer, the corporation will undertake desilting, construction of a walkway, development of sedimentation ponds, and setting up a security room. The new walkway around the lake will be over 1.2 kilometers long.
Pollution Control Measures
The minor irrigation department will focus on ornamental grill fencing and floating wetlands, which will help absorb nutrients from the lake, thereby reducing the effect of pollution.
Additional Amenities and Future Plans
Plans include the construction of an idol immersion tank within the lake premises. Additionally, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is planning a sewage treatment plant for the area, although the location is yet to be finalized.
