Trichy: ‘Reimagining Teppakulam’, a national-level design contest organized by Archtrust and the Indian Institute of Architects in partnership with the Trichy Corporation, has selected a design proposal from Bengaluru-based architects to redevelop the Teppakulam tank near the Rockfort in Trichy.
Top Three Designs Awarded
The top three designs submitted by architects and urban planners were chosen by a jury and awarded cash prizes in Trichy on Sunday. The competition aimed to propose a land use design for the tank and the adjoining 30 acres of commercialized areas. The focus was on sustainable infrastructure, water management, cultural landscape, and promoting heritage value along with green spaces.
Winners and Prizes
The jury, comprising senior architects, selected the idea from Public Landscape Urbanism Studio, Bengaluru, for the first prize, which includes a cash award of ₹4 lakh. Habitat Collective, a team from Mumbai and Bengaluru, secured the second place with a prize of ₹2 lakh, while AVN Architecture & Urbanism from Ahmedabad took third place with ₹1 lakh. A total of 31 entries were submitted.
Redevelopment Plans
In the first phase, the Trichy Corporation, along with the competition organizers, will redevelop the four banks of Teppakulam based on the top three ideas within three weeks. The redevelopment will include rainwater harvesting, a connected water network to recharge the tank, a network of pedestrian spaces, and a green buffer. The source of funding is yet to be decided.
