Karnataka's Minister for Information Technology, Priyank Kharge, announced on Wednesday that the State Data Centre will be temporarily halted for two days. The shutdown is aimed at implementing critical upgrades to bolster cybersecurity and ensure the stability of services. The exercise is scheduled to take place over the weekend, minimizing disruption to government operations.
Reason for the Temporary Halt
According to Priyank Kharge, the temporary halt is part of a routine maintenance and security enhancement protocol. “We are undertaking this exercise to ensure that cyber security, the stability of the services, and so on are reformed further,” the minister stated. The move comes amid increasing cyber threats targeting government infrastructure globally.
Impact on Government Services
The State Data Centre hosts numerous critical applications and databases used by various government departments. During the two-day halt, non-essential services may experience downtime, but essential services such as emergency response systems will remain operational through backup arrangements. The government has advised departments to plan accordingly to minimize inconvenience.
Details of the Shutdown
The maintenance window is set for June 29-30, 2026. The data centre will be completely offline during this period, with all non-critical systems shut down. The upgrades include patching vulnerabilities, updating firewall configurations, and conducting stress tests on the network infrastructure. The minister emphasized that this proactive measure is necessary to safeguard citizen data and ensure uninterrupted service delivery in the long run.
Background and Context
The Karnataka State Data Centre was established to centralize IT resources and improve efficiency in government operations. It handles data from over 200 departments and agencies. The last major upgrade was conducted two years ago. This temporary halt is part of a broader initiative to modernize the state's digital infrastructure.
