Panaji: Goa is set to launch an advanced artificial intelligence-powered surveillance system designed to enhance law enforcement and road safety, as announced by Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Wednesday.
AI-Enabled Cameras for Enhanced Policing
Speaking at the inauguration of the new transport department headquarters in Porvorim, Godinho stated, "The AI-enabled surveillance cameras are designed to strengthen policing, reduce crime, and improve road safety." He emphasized that the new cameras will feature high-speed detection, night vision, and the ability to identify individuals even inside vehicles with tinted glass. The system can also capture small number plates with precision, enabling more effective tracking of offenders.
Command and Control Center in Panaji
The entire system will be monitored through a command and control center to be established in Panaji, allowing real-time tracking of violations and suspicious activities. Godinho explained that the rollout will occur in phases. In the first phase, 92 cameras will be installed at strategic locations across Goa. "Work is already underway, with approximately 25 locations expected to become operational within the next two weeks. We aim to scale this up to around 50 locations within two months. We plan to cover over 200 sites in the future. The long-term goal is to monitor all major junctions and interior villages in Goa," he said.
Deterring Crime and Reducing Traffic Violations
Godinho asserted that the initiative will deter crime and reduce traffic violations. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, also speaking at the event, revealed that so far, 4,700 driving license holders who received challans for various traffic offenses have undergone driver refresher training at Regional Transport Offices. The training includes road safety and traffic education to ensure responsible driving and road safety.
New Transport Department Headquarters
The new 5,000-square-foot head office of the Directorate of Transport has been established with fully integrated systems, and 49 transport services are now available online.
