The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday issued a clarification regarding a social media claim about a security breach in its On Screen Marking (OSM) portal. The board stated that the portal used for actual evaluation of answer books was not compromised, and the alleged vulnerability pertained only to a testing site containing sample data.
Student's Claim and Board's Response
A 19-year-old student had claimed that he hacked the CBSE OSM portal and subsequently informed the board about the site's vulnerability. This claim went viral on Tuesday, adding to the existing controversy surrounding the CBSE Class 12 OSM initiative. In response, CBSE said the claim was about the URL cbse.onmarks.co.in, which was a testing site used for internal testing and review. The board emphasized that no actual evaluation data, marks, or other sensitive information were stored on that site.
Actual Evaluation Portal Secure
The board clarified that the portal deployed for actual evaluation bore a different URL and had not been compromised. It further stated that the portal does not have the vulnerabilities described in the social media post. 'No security breaches have come to light on the portal deployed for the actual evaluation work,' the board said in its statement.
OSM System Features and Safeguards
CBSE highlighted that the OSM system was implemented to enhance transparency in assessments and includes robust grievance redressal mechanisms. The board assured that strong safeguards have been put in place to ensure the integrity of the platform actually deployed for evaluation. Under the OSM system, answer books are scanned and evaluated digitally by examiners on a computer, replacing the traditional physical mode of evaluation.
Introduction of OSM for Class 12
CBSE introduced the On Screen Marking system for Class 12 answer book evaluation, beginning with the 2026 board examinations. This digital approach aims to streamline the evaluation process and improve accuracy and efficiency.
