Bhagalpur Police Crack Down on Major Biometric Fraud Operation
In a significant breakthrough against rising cybercrime in the Bhagalpur region, police authorities have apprehended a key suspect involved in a sophisticated biometric fraud scheme. The arrest marks a crucial step in combating financial exploitation targeting vulnerable rural populations.
Details of the Arrest and Operation
Law enforcement officials from Bhagalpur, in collaboration with the dedicated cyber cell team, successfully detained Rajkishore Yadav from Khushalpur village. The operation was conducted under the jurisdiction of the Pirpainti police station, located within the Kahalgaon subdivision. This coordinated effort demonstrates the increasing focus on digital crime prevention in the area.
The investigation was initiated following a formal written complaint filed by a resident of Parshurampur on March 23. Prompt action led to the formation of a joint police team tasked with unraveling the complex network of fraudulent activities.
Nature of the Alleged Fraud
Authorities revealed that Yadav, who operated as a customer service point (CSP) operator, allegedly employed deceptive techniques to clone fingerprints of more than 400 individuals. The victims included numerous women from various communities.
The fraudulent methods involved:
- Creating silicone biometric moulds to replicate fingerprint patterns
- Utilizing paper copies to capture fingerprint impressions
- Collecting sensitive personal documents including Aadhaar numbers
- Gathering ATM cards and bank passbooks from unsuspecting villagers
DSP Kanishk Srivastava of the cyber cell explained that Yadav specifically targeted individuals with limited literacy and awareness. Villagers seeking routine services such as Aadhaar updates, e-KYC verification, and basic banking assistance became victims of this elaborate scam.
Financial Impact and Recovery Efforts
Police estimates suggest the fraudulent activities may have siphoned off several crores of rupees through unauthorized access to bank accounts and diversion of government scheme benefits. Investigators believe each victim suffered average losses ranging between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000.
During the operation, law enforcement recovered substantial evidence including:
- Fingerprint copies belonging to 320 individuals, including residents from Katihar district
- Four detailed cash transaction registers documenting illicit financial flows
- A laptop containing potentially incriminating digital records
- An account-opening register with sensitive customer information
- A specialized fingerprint capture machine used in the fraudulent operations
- 120 ATM cards and 70 bank passbooks obtained through deceptive means
- Various Aadhaar details and other compromising materials
Expanding Investigation and Network Exposure
During interrogation, Yadav reportedly identified Sonu Mandal from Salempur as an accomplice who facilitated the arrangement of fingerprints for cloning purposes. City SP Shailendra Singh confirmed that police efforts are ongoing to expose the complete network of individuals involved in this criminal enterprise.
The arrest confirms the online scam was conducted by the CSP operator in collaboration with other fraudsters, according to official statements. Authorities emphasize that this case highlights the vulnerabilities in rural digital service provision and the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity awareness among populations with limited technological literacy.
This development represents a substantial victory for Bhagalpur police in their continuous battle against increasingly sophisticated cyber fraud schemes targeting financial systems and government benefit programs.
