Ahmedabad police have uncovered a massive cyber fraud operation involving a single bank account that processed a staggering sum of money in a short period. An account held with a cooperative bank in the city's Ramol area became the central hub for routing illicit funds, leading to a major investigation.
Staggering Scale of Transactions in One Month
According to a First Information Report (FIR) lodged by Ramol police on Thursday, the account witnessed transactions worth Rs 148.33 crore in just over a month. The activity occurred between November 1 and December 11, 2025. Investigators found that of this enormous amount, Rs 148.32 crore was rapidly transferred out to various other accounts, leaving a mere balance of around Rs 46,000.
The case surfaced after a victim filed a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP). This triggered a deeper look into the account, revealing its connection to a web of cyber crimes across India.
Nationwide Web of Victims Across Multiple States
The FIR details that this single account has been flagged in a total of 117 cyber fraud complaints from victims scattered across the country. The complaints paint a picture of a pan-India scam with significant clusters in several states.
The state-wise breakdown of complaints includes:
- Maharashtra: 23 complaints
- Karnataka: 11 complaints
- Rajasthan: 9 complaints
The remaining complaints originated from a wide range of states including Gujarat, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Telangana, and Odisha.
Modus Operandi: Exploiting Financial Literacy and Promising Loans
Police have outlined the alleged method used by the accused to orchestrate this scheme. The FIR states that the perpetrators exploited the limited financial literacy of individuals in whose names the bank accounts were opened.
The accused reportedly approached these individuals under the pretext of helping them secure loans. Once the accounts were opened, the accused retained control of all crucial banking instruments, including the passbooks, cheque books, and ATM cards. This control allowed them to freely use the accounts as conduits to receive and transfer money obtained through various online financial frauds.
A senior police official involved in the case confirmed that a thorough analysis is currently underway. Teams are meticulously examining the financial trails and digital footprints associated with the account to identify and trace the main accused behind this sophisticated network.
The discovery of this operation highlights the evolving challenges in combating cybercrime and the sophisticated methods used to launder illegally acquired funds through the banking system.
