US President Donald Trump and top administration officials met with leading artificial intelligence (AI) executives at the G7 summit in France on Wednesday to discuss a US-led effort to coordinate global AI standards. The working lunch on AI and the digital age brought together world leaders as the US seeks to make policy decisions that dictate who globally can access American AI software.
Key Participants in the Meeting
Trump was joined by senior cabinet members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The meeting also gathered fierce Silicon Valley rivals. According to Axios, key participants included:
- Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI
- Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic
- Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind
- Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce
- Alexandr Wang, representing Meta
- Arthur Mensch, CEO of France-based Mistral AI
- Aidan Gomez, CEO of Canada-based Cohere
Tech Leaders’ Reactions
After the meeting, OpenAI’s head of global affairs, Chris Lehane, told reporters that the room actively agreed on creating a unified global forum for democratic countries and AI labs to build shared safety standards. Lehane emphasized that the US intends to lead the way. “The ability to generate or create standards would be an avenue or pathway helping to ensure ongoing and continued access to the frontier models,” he explained. The group also discussed protecting children online and keeping AI technology accessible globally.
Trump’s Remarks on AI
Speaking at a press conference, President Trump praised the meeting but struck a cautious tone on AI’s power. “What's going on with that? It's going to be the biggest thing ever. We have to be very careful with it. It's both great and could be bad. We have to be careful with it, but we're leading China. We're leading the world on that,” Trump said.
The meeting follows a newly signed US executive order on AI that introduces voluntary safety testing for the largest AI laboratories.
