The Tamil Nadu government has made it mandatory for all schools, including private institutions across the state, to conduct physical education classes for students studying in classes 6 to 12 from this academic year. This decision aims to ensure that students receive adequate physical activity and sports training as part of their curriculum.
Guidelines Issued by School Education Department
The School Education Department has issued detailed guidelines for the implementation of physical education classes. A senior official from the department stated on Sunday that there were reports and complaints that many private schools failed to conduct physical education classes last year, instead using those periods for extra academic sessions. To address this, the new guidelines mandate strict adherence to physical education schedules.
Special Sports Training After School Hours
In addition to regular physical education classes, the guidelines specify that special sports training should be provided for students who are interested in sports after school hours. This initiative is designed to nurture talent and encourage students to pursue sports at a competitive level.
Officials have been instructed to identify schools that have achieved success in one or more disciplines at state and national level sports competitions. These schools will serve as models for promoting sports excellence across the state.
Implementation and Monitoring
The department will closely monitor compliance with the new rules. Schools that fail to conduct physical education classes as mandated may face action. The move is expected to improve student fitness and promote a culture of sports in Tamil Nadu, aligning with broader health and education goals.
