The Elusive Goal of Artificial General Intelligence

"Why haven’t we built more products like AlphaFold when AI makes it possible? Because we are spending trillions of dollars on LLMs," he lamented.

When asked about AI research in India, Russell advised against a narrow focus on developing proprietary large language models (LLMs). He cited data bias concerns, as most training data originates from Western sources, and questioned the economic necessity of such models for business applications. Instead, he recommended prioritizing foundational skills in data analysis, statistics, and machine learning mathematics.

Russell praised Indian officials for their interest in creating specific, narrow-application systems in sectors like healthcare, education, and engineering. "Absolutely; I believe that is the right strategy," he affirmed, suggesting that India could "leapfrog" by integrating robust safety and ethical standards into utility-based AI products. He stressed that in the long run, only safe AI can coexist with humanity, making it the logical investment.

Addressing whether AGI evolution is inevitable, Russell drew parallels to historical technologies like cloning and nuclear power, where humanity chose restraint due to potential harms. While AGI promises a tenfold increase in global GDP, acting as a "very, very powerful magnet," he noted that failure could lead to a "mini ice age" in AI research. He remains confident in the computational theory of the mind, seeing no evidence to suggest the brain operates beyond neural signals.
