Photographer Anil Gupta Finds Art in the Ordinary

Anil Gupta, a renowned photographer and visual researcher from Jalandhar, has dedicated his life to finding beauty in the mundane. His work, which includes both photographs and paintings, brings inanimate objects to life, challenging viewers to see the world through a different lens.

Early Inspirations and Artistic Journey

Gupta's artistic journey began in his childhood, inspired by his grandmother's wall paintings. He recalls, 'My grandmother's wall-painted murals and figures decked our home across festivals like Holi, Diwali, Ashoi Ashtami, and Durga Navami. Using bamboo reeds as pens and paint as ink, her free-flowing folk imagery conjured magnificent images. Art subconsciously entered my heart through these experiences.'

Educated at Apeejay College of Fine Arts in Jalandhar and Chandigarh Arts College, Gupta has been associated with Apeejay College for over 40 years. He initially took art as a hobby course but soon found his passion, eventually teaching photography and visual arts.

Finding Art in the Ordinary

Gupta's subjects range from discarded bottles and broken bicycles to windows, rocks, and lifeless mannequins. His ability to find beauty in overlooked objects has earned him national and international acclaim. He states, 'I don't like rushed, busy, brimming canvasses. Formation and minimalism appeal to me. In painting, my style is changing; I tend to use fewer strokes. I am keen on things that others may overlook. Nature's lights and shades, random objects, and textures fascinate me.'

Recognition and Achievements

Gupta has received numerous accolades, including the State Award from Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, Chandigarh; selection as an artist for the 64th National Art Exhibition by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; and three Commendable Certificates in Photography from the Indian Academy of Fine Arts, Amritsar. He has been a Special Invitee Artist twice and has participated in shows across India, as well as in Turkey and the Netherlands.

Influence of Raghu Rai

A life-altering experience for Gupta was spending time with legendary photographer Raghu Rai during a visit to Jalandhar about a decade ago. Rai's advice to 'Kaam Karo' (work) and 'Cheezon ko alag dhang se dekho' (see things from a different perspective) deeply influenced his approach.

Philosophy and Travel

Gupta's work is rooted in spiritualism. He takes annual trips to spiritual places like Benares, Mahakal, or the Kumbh Mela with his camera. He believes that 'the real India reveals itself only during travels.' Even after retirement, he continues to teach and travel, finding happiness in humble homes and capturing the essence of life through his lens.

Anil Gupta's journey is a testament to the power of observation and the art of seeing beyond the surface, reminding us that beauty truly lies in the eyes of the beholder.
