In a significant technological advancement for public safety, the Nagpur city police have introduced an artificial intelligence-based crowd management system. The pilot launch of the platform, named 'AI Nirikshak', comes just ahead of the Maharashtra Winter Assembly Session, scheduled to commence on December 8.
Core Capabilities of AI Nirikshak
The newly deployed system represents a major leap in real-time crowd intelligence. It integrates advanced computer vision and AI-video analytics with existing CCTV and digital surveillance networks. A key function is AI-powered crowd density detection, which uses heatmaps to identify hotspots and predict potential congestion zones before they become critical.
The platform fuses multi-source data from fixed cameras, mobile police vans, and drones to create a comprehensive surveillance picture. This allows authorities to monitor, detect, and respond to emerging crowd risks instantly.
Proactive Alerting and Threat Detection
One of the system's standout features is its 'Risk Flag Alerts' capability. This function can identify weapons like knives, guns, and other sharp objects in real-time. It also sends instant alerts for abnormal or suspicious activities and can automatically track suspects as they move across different camera feeds.
Furthermore, the tool provides object-based alerts. This includes detecting unattended bags, violations of restricted zones, breaches of barricades, reverse movement in crowds, and the formation of abnormal groups. For vehicular security, it monitors restricted zones, flags unauthorized vehicles on VIP routes, and detects cars on no-entry roads.
Facial Recognition and Operational Efficiency
Facial recognition technology is a critical component of AI Nirikshak, integrated directly with police databases. The system alerts personnel when individuals on watchlists enter sensitive zones and provides real-time movement tracking of suspects.
To optimize resource deployment, the platform includes a crowd footfall measurement tool. It provides a real-time count of people entering and exiting each gate of a venue, helping police commanders deploy manpower more efficiently based on accurate data.
Technology Partners and Future Vision
The robust system is powered by Microsoft Azure's cloud infrastructure and utilizes Click2Cloud's AI Orchestration Engine. This technological backbone supports the complex integration of various surveillance inputs and analytics.
Speaking at the launch, Commissioner of Nagpur Police, Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, outlined an ambitious vision. He stated that their goal is to establish Maharashtra as a national leader in AI-powered crowd management, beginning with Nagpur and eventually scaling the solution across the entire state.
The introduction of AI Nirikshak marks a transformative step in policing strategy, shifting from reactive measures to proactive, intelligence-led crowd control and public safety management.
