Microsoft is implementing a significant change to its Windows 11 operating system by removing the Copilot button from multiple built-in applications. The decision follows a recent blog post by Windows and Devices President Pavan Davuluri titled "Our commitment to Windows quality," where Microsoft explicitly stated plans to reduce "unnecessary Copilot entry points." The company is beginning this initiative with the aforementioned applications, and the changes are currently rolling out gradually to users worldwide. This represents a deliberate shift in Microsoft's approach to AI visibility within the Windows environment.
Notepad's Subtle Transformation
In the latest Notepad version (v11.2512.28.0), Microsoft has eliminated Copilot branding from features such as Write, Rewrite, and Summarize. The previously prominent Copilot icon in the toolbar has been replaced with a neutral pen icon labeled "Writing tools," completely removing any direct reference to artificial intelligence. Importantly, while the branding has changed, the underlying functionality remains intact. These writing tools continue to be powered by AI technology but are now presented as standard application features rather than distinct AI capabilities.
The option to disable these features has also been relocated from "AI Features" to "Advanced Features," further de-emphasizing their artificial intelligence origins. This subtle rebranding represents Microsoft's effort to integrate AI more seamlessly into the user experience without overwhelming users with constant reminders of the technology behind the features.
Snipping Tool's More Direct Change
The Snipping Tool has undergone a more substantial transformation. The Copilot button, which previously appeared after selecting an area using Quick markup, has been completely removed. Unlike Notepad where AI features persist in the background, there is currently no visible AI integration remaining in the Snipping Tool. This represents a more direct rollback of AI visibility in this particular application, though Microsoft has not indicated plans to remove AI functionality entirely from its software suite.
