Madras HC Grants Anti-Piracy Order for Ram Charan's 'Peddi'

Piracy remains a significant challenge for the cinema industry, threatening a substantial portion of earnings. In a major relief for the makers of Ram Charan's upcoming Telugu film 'Peddi', the Madras High Court has issued an anti-piracy order. The court prohibits the illegal uploading, copying, transmission, or release of the movie on the internet, both before and after its theatrical release.

According to a report by Bar and Bench, the order was passed by Justice V Lakshminarayanan during a hearing on Wednesday evening. The case was filed by the film's producer, who sought the court's protection against piracy and copyright violations. The makers requested strict action against individuals and websites that might attempt to leak or share the movie illegally online.

Court Stops Illegal Sharing of Film

After reviewing the case documents and evidence submitted by the producers, the court noted that the makers had invested substantial amounts in the film's production and promotions. The court observed that if the movie were leaked online without authorization, it could cause serious financial loss and damage to the producers. Consequently, the court granted interim protection to the film.

The order restrains unknown individuals, websites, and online platforms from uploading, sharing, copying, or distributing the movie illegally via the internet. This interim injunction is valid for four weeks, after which the matter will be heard again.

What is an Ashok Kumar Order?

The High Court also granted what is known as an 'Ashok Kumar order.' This type of order is typically issued in piracy and copyright cases where the identities of those involved in illegal activities are not known in advance. It enables filmmakers to take swift legal action against anyone who leaks or circulates pirated copies of a film online. Such orders have become common in the film industry, especially before the release of big-budget movies.
