Metro Railway Kolkata and IIT Madras Partner for LIM Propulsion Research
Kolkata Metro, IIT Madras Collaborate on LIM Propulsion Tech

Metro Railway, Kolkata has formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to jointly pursue research and development on Linear Induction Motor (LIM)-based propulsion systems for Metro rail operations. This strategic partnership aims to evaluate the technical viability, operational efficiency, and long-term cost implications of deploying LIM technology in Indian Metro networks.

Scope of Collaboration

As part of the collaboration, a pilot project is being planned in which a Metro motor coach will be retrofitted with LIM technology to enable field testing and collection of operational data. The study will further explore the effectiveness of LIM systems in challenging corridor conditions such as sharper curves and steeper gradients, which are common in many Indian metro corridors.

Expected Outcomes

The initiative is expected to enhance indigenous expertise in next-generation urban rail technologies while encouraging innovation-led growth in the Metro sector. Findings from the project are likely to aid future decision-making on the adoption of alternative propulsion technologies for upcoming Metro rail projects across India.
