Google is officially bringing its powerful AI, Gemini, to cars. Gemini is rolling out to vehicles with Google built-in, replacing the traditional Google Assistant with a more conversational and capable co-pilot.
Google is delivering Gemini to all eligible vehicles via a software update. The rollout has begun in English for users in the US, with more languages and countries expected in the coming months.
What is Changing
The biggest change drivers will notice is the end of rigid, robotic voice commands. Gemini is designed for natural conversation, allowing you to speak as you would to a passenger, Google said.

Instead of searching for restaurants, users can give Gemini complex preferences. They can say, "I need lunch at a highly rated sit-down place with outdoor seating along my route," and then follow up with, "Is there easy parking there?" Gemini uses Google Maps data to provide specific answers.

Gemini acts as a scout. Users can ask, "I'm driving by the stadium—is there an event today that I should avoid?" If you spot trouble, you can report it by saying, "I see an accident in the right lane," helping other drivers in real-time.
Smarter Messaging
Gemini can summarise long text threads so users can catch up without taking eyes off the road. Additionally, they can ask it to reply with ETA.
Personalised Vibe Control
Tuning the radio is now about the vibe rather than the frequency. Users can request, "Play upbeat 70s folk-rock for a mountain drive, but skip the slow ballads," across apps like YouTube Music.
Brainstorming on the Go
With Gemini Live (currently in beta), drivers can engage in free-flowing, back-and-forth dialogue to learn or plan.
Destination Deep-Dive
Ask Gemini for the history of or fun facts about any area. Users can even interrupt the AI to dive deeper into a specific story it mentions.

Gemini can help users curate their itinerary while they are still on the highway. Users can ask for hike recommendations in a specific area and follow up by asking about the specific views on a certain trail.

You can ask, "How do I prep this car for an automatic wash?" or "How do I limit how high the trunk opens?" Gemini pulls answers directly from your specific car's digital manual.

For electric vehicle owners, Gemini provides instant clarity on range. Ask, "What's my battery level on arrival?" or "Find a charger near a café so I can grab coffee while I wait."

Users no longer need to find the specific button for the defroster. Just say, "It's foggy and freezing in here," and Gemini will intelligently turn up the heat and activate the defogger for you.
