Five semiconductor plants operational by end 2026: Vaishnaw

India is on track to have five semiconductor manufacturing plants operational by the end of 2026, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. Of the 12 semiconductor projects approved by the central government, three are already in commercial production, with two more plants scheduled for inauguration in the coming months.

CG Semi OSAT facility begins commercial production

The CG Semi Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, has commenced commercial production, becoming the country's third semiconductor plant to reach this milestone this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the facility on Saturday.

Vaishnaw described the plant as not only a technical achievement but also a symbol of social change. Young women from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, and Gujarat are employed as operators at the facility, having traveled to Malaysia for specialized training. The minister added that as India's semiconductor ecosystem matures, similar world-class training could increasingly be made available domestically.

Chips for domestic and global markets

The chips manufactured at the Sanand facility will serve automobiles, scooters, and industrial equipment within India, while also being exported to Japan, the United States, and Europe. This positions India as a meaningful contributor to the global semiconductor supply chain, according to Vaishnaw.

India's electronics manufacturing sector has grown into an industry worth close to ₹13 lakh crore, supporting over 25 lakh jobs. Vaishnaw said this progress would help establish India as a global technology power.

Strengthening India's position in the global value chain

The minister stated that the commencement of commercial production at the CG Semi facility marks another significant step toward strengthening India's position in the global semiconductor value chain. It reinforces the country's emergence as a trusted and self-reliant destination for semiconductor manufacturing, establishing India as a rising global technology power.
