Emergence AI Establishes Strategic Research Hub in Bengaluru for Autonomous Systems Development

Emergence AI, a pioneering frontier agentic artificial intelligence company headquartered in New York and founded by three Indian-American scientists formerly with IBM Research, has officially launched Emergence India Labs (EIL) in Bengaluru. This significant initiative is designed to accelerate the development of advanced autonomous AI agents capable of operating mission-critical digital and physical infrastructure systems worldwide.

Strategic Vision: Moving Beyond Traditional IT Services

The establishment of EIL represents a strategic move to position India at the forefront of advanced technological innovation, shifting beyond the country's traditional IT services model. The lab will focus on creating next-generation autonomous systems that can power sophisticated manufacturing processes, complex logistics networks, and industrial automation solutions. This transition aims to embed India more deeply into the global value chain of intelligent physical systems.

Expansion Plans and Academic Collaboration

Emergence India Labs is projected to scale substantially over the coming years, with plans to employ approximately 500 research scientists and engineers within the next three to four years. Strategically located near the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, the lab will foster deep collaboration with the academic ecosystem through comprehensive joint research programs, academic exchanges, hackathons, and specialized summer schools.

This partnership is specifically designed to cultivate a robust talent pipeline in autonomous systems technology. Professor Siddhartha Gadgil of IISc will join EIL as chief scientist while maintaining his academic position, ensuring strong continuity between research and practical application.

Leadership and Operational Structure

The Bengaluru facility will be led by internationally recognized scientists with impressive academic credentials. The leadership team includes Prasenjit Dey (PhD, EPFL; IIT Delhi), who will oversee operations in India, Ravi Kokku (PhD, UT Austin; IIT Kharagpur), and Professor Gadgil (PhD, Caltech; Indian Statistical Institute). This distinguished team brings together diverse expertise in artificial intelligence, systems engineering, and computational research.

A Core AI-Native Research Hub

Unlike many multinational research and development centers that function primarily as satellite extensions of overseas headquarters, Emergence India Labs has been conceived as a core, AI-native R&D hub within India. This approach is specifically aimed at anchoring sovereign AI capabilities within the country, enabling India to develop independent technological competencies in this critical domain.
