Mukesh Ambani Announces Massive AI Investment to Drive Down Costs and Create Jobs
In a landmark address at the AI Impact Summit, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani declared that the conglomerate will aggressively work to bring down the cost of artificial intelligence (AI), drawing a parallel to how mobile data became affordable and accessible. Ambani revealed that Reliance Group's venture Jio, in collaboration with RIL, plans to invest a staggering Rs 10 lakh crore over the next seven years, starting this year, to accelerate India's AI capabilities.
AI as a Force for Democratization and Abundance
Ambani struck an optimistic tone, stating that "the best of AI is yet to come" and firmly rejecting the notion that AI will "kill work." He addressed the global debate on whether AI concentrates power or democratizes opportunity, asserting, "AI can usher in an era of super abundance." According to a PTI report, he emphasized that AI's advent should be viewed as a transformative tool for broadening economic prospects rather than diminishing them.
Transforming Employment, Not Eliminating Jobs
Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, Ambani directly countered fears of widespread job losses, stating, "We will prove that AI will not take away jobs. Rather, it will create new high-skill work opportunities." He explained that while technological disruptions often spark anxiety, AI is poised to generate entirely new, specialized roles, boost efficiency, and foster innovation across multiple industries. He maintained that India's vast pool of skilled professionals and expanding digital infrastructure position the country strongly to leverage AI for inclusive development and sustained economic progress.
Strategic Collaboration and Infrastructure Development
Ambani outlined Reliance and Jio's strategy to collaborate extensively with Indian businesses, startups, IITs, and research institutions to hasten AI integration. The focus will be on offering scalable, dependable, and cost-effective AI solutions. He identified high computing costs and limited infrastructure as primary obstacles to AI expansion. To overcome these, Jio Intelligence will establish a sovereign computing framework through three key measures:
- Creation of gigawatt-scale data centers, with construction already begun in Jamnagar.
- Development of advanced AI models and platforms tailored for Indian needs.
- Fostering enhanced international collaboration to advance AI technologies.
Ambani's vision positions Reliance at the forefront of making AI affordable and impactful, akin to the mobile data revolution, while championing its role as a job creator and economic democratizer in India's growth story.
