Authorities in Punjab's Sangrur district have launched a criminal investigation after a sophisticated artificial intelligence-generated image, designed to target the state government, spread rapidly across social media platforms. This incident has triggered a fresh crackdown on digital misinformation in the region.
The Viral Fabrication and Official Denial
The controversy revolves around a fabricated photograph that began circulating online. The image deceptively shows a protest-style signboard placed outside the official residence of the Sangrur deputy commissioner. The sign cruelly reads: "Not built by honorable chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann."
This deepfake emerged at a sensitive time, coinciding with the administration's announcement of a long-awaited Rs 1.06-crore reconstruction project for the district's deteriorating infrastructure. Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Rahul Chaba swiftly addressed the issue on Tuesday, categorically stating the image was an AI-generated hoax.
"No such board has actually been installed at the location shown," Chaba clarified. He emphasized that the photograph was deliberately created to tarnish the reputation of both the Punjab government and the district administration.
Cybercrime Probe and Infrastructure Context
In response, Senior Superintendent of Police Sartaj Singh Chahal has directed the Sangrur cybercrime cell to identify the creators behind the deceptive graphic. The police have issued a stern warning, stating that the law will pursue not only the originators but also individuals who share such unverified content.
The digital scandal unfolded against the backdrop of a genuine local infrastructure grievance. The administration is actively working to resolve issues related to a 640-meter stretch of road near the deputy commissioner's residence. This road was excavated by the water supply and sewerage division for essential piping work, causing disruption and becoming a point of public frustration.
Officials confirmed that the sewerage division has already deposited the Rs 1.06 crore required for the rebuild. The tender process was initiated on January 1, and the allotment is nearly finalized, with physical repairs scheduled to commence within the next 15 days.
Crackdown on AI-Driven Misinformation
SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal has alerted social media users that the district's cybercrime unit will be closely monitoring local platforms for any further instances of fabricated content. This incident highlights the growing concern among officials regarding the increasing use of generative AI in political discourse.
